Born in Kingston, with roots in Yallahs, St. Thomas — and in Canada by the age of four. The island never left his blood. Oba — a name that means king — turned a childhood spent dancing into a two-decade career: a Juno Award, world tours across eleven countries, and now a company out to reshape the music industry itself.
Underneath the awards and the boardrooms, he's still the kid who fell in love with music on a Toronto stage and a Kingston-rooted balcony. This is the story so far.

Born in Kingston with family roots in Yallahs, St. Thomas, Oba came to Canada at just four years old — but the Caribbean spirit travelled with him.
The spark hit early. A friend of his mother's took him to see Michael Jackson and his brothers live in Toronto — his first concert ever — and something in him answered. From that day he sang and danced everywhere, the entertainer at every family gathering; the shy kid who came alive on a stage.
In an art class he met Luther Brown — now one of the industry's most respected choreographers — and the two built rival dance crews, battling routine for routine. At fourteen, singing on his balcony, a neighbour offered to introduce him to a management company. His mother declined and put him in karate instead. The fire was already lit.

Oba founded Ovaload Entertainment — a seven-piece performance band — and ran it like a business as much as a show, negotiating international contracts and touring across eleven countries.
Creative direction and hard management, side by side: booking the rooms, shaping the sets, moving crowds from one continent to the next. The band-leader years built the executive to come.

In 2004, Oba and his group In Essence won the Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording — Canada's highest music honour, and the milestone every artist dreams of.

The songwriter picked up the headphones and never looked back. Reading rooms, blending genres, moving crowds — Oba built a reputation as a DJ who plays for the moment, not the ego.
From private events to primetime club sets, the mission stays the same: keep the floor alive.

Sought after from Dubai to Oman as a DJ and consultant, Oba now lives by a simple code: wisdom first, family always, and an over-standing of everything he steps into. Every stage and every deal feeds one ambition — to build something that outlasts him.
Which leads to the next chapter — Muuzbox.
The Juno-winning group Oba wrote and recorded with — see their 2004 Juno Awards performance in the Live section below.

It started as a dream — literally. Oba fell asleep picturing himself on a stage with four other guys, and woke up on a mission to find them, one by one. The first he approached was a kid he barely knew, until he heard the voice in the hallway: "I'm putting a group together — it's going to be big. You in?"
That was the birth of In Essence. Signed by BMG Canada, the group toured the world — Canada, Germany, Jamaica, the Bahamas — and in 2004 won the Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording.
Studio recordings from the In Essence catalogue can live here too — send the songs and I'll embed them as players.
Beyond writing with the group, Oba produces on his own — crafting the beats, arranging the records and shaping every sound from the ground up. These are the tracks built start to finish in his own studio.

Beyond the decks, Oba is Founder, CEO & Chair of Muuzbox — turning two decades in music into a technology company reshaping the creator economy. It starts with a live venue engagement platform: guests scan a QR code to set the mood, request tracks and vote on the playlist — no app, no hardware — already live in Dubai and Thailand.
The bigger vision is AI-powered tools that close the structural gaps artists have lived with for years — built alongside his brother Conway Hyacienth, CTO. Creative excellence meets technology, without ever losing sight of the artists it serves.
